Great update to the OS system5
With the exception of one (big) negative, this has been a terrific upgrade. There is no doubt that this is an 'optimized' system, as my Mac G4 is blazing through things faster than ever. Standards like iPhoto and iTunes still put Apple on the cutting edge, but new features like Safari and the Dashboard/Widgets are great for making your life easier. So, what was the one big negative, you wonder? When I upgraded, my modem driver went AWOL. For four long weeks I was without internet access! Apple engineers worked hard to solve the problem (which was very rare, but I was not the only person to suffer from it), and Apple Tech Support people were fabulous about keeping me posted as to what was happening during my long wait (via phone since I didn't have email). Happily my 'puter is now fully up and running due to an upgrade sent from Apple, direct. Despite this *big* hassle, I have to say that I really like Tiger and I would definitely recommend it to fellow Mac users. The speed and ease of the operating system make it worth the money.

Customer Reviews

Okay. Wow.5
(1) You will notice a speed increase on any Mac that fits the specs. Boot time is sliced almost in half on my dual processor G5, and by a third on an older G4 tower. They've obviously put a lot of effort into optimizing the OS code and bringing a new level of "snappiness" to OS X's already quick performance. In my opinion, the speed improvement is reason alone to get Tiger ... it's that impressive.

(2) As with other OS X upgrades, I'd suggest a fresh install, wiping the hard drive completely (backing up your stuff, of course, first!), not an upgrade install or "clean" install. I've tried both and, frankly, the fresh install on a pristine hard drive has a better "feel" to it and, if experience is any guide, will reduce problems down the line.

(3) Spotlight is everything it's claimed to be. However ... your computer may seem to be acting oddly for the first hour or so as Spotlight (I assume) creates an index. Once that's done, you're flying.

This is an amazing upgrade ... well worth the wait and the price. What I love most is the continuing attention to detail ... the cool visual effects with widgets are but one example. Launch a widget and the entire desktop ripples like cool, clear water. I'm still having fun with that!

Windows is now way behind ... or is that a cloud of dust a few miles back?

Customer Reviews

Not a major upgrade but a nice one4
Mac OS X 10.3 Panther is not the substantial upgrade that 10.2 Jaguar (made "snappier" with Quartz Extreme) and 10.1 Puma (the first Mac OS X usable for the masses) represented. It does, however, add many welcome features and is particularly recommended for notebook (iBook and PowerBook G4) and PowerMac G5 users.
It is difficult to list every new feature (Apple claims 150 new features). I will describe only the major ones (as well as my personal favorites).
The most significant addition is Exposé, which upon a key press or a mouse gesture, shrinks all running windows so you can see them all. Click on one of the windows, it zooms in to a normal size. It is very cool and very effective, possibly the most revolutionary window management technology since the dawn of windowing graphical user interface. Even more impressive, all the windows continue to update themselves even when they shrink, giving you the "control center" view of running applications. Exposé also lets you hide all the windows (so you can see what's on the desktop) or hide all the windows but the active one. This is a huge addition, especially for those with lower resolution display.

Code-named "Jaguar," the next major release of Mac OS X will delight you with the innovation, elegance and ease of use you've come to expect from Apple. The initial release of Mac OS X gave you the power of UNIX with the simplicity of Macintosh. But it merely paved the way for the next generation of hardware and software offerings from Apple and third parties.

    Best Client OS I've Used5
    Pros:
    - Improved performance (nearly matches the lightweight Mac OS Classic)
    - Feature-laden Finder
    - Rock-solid UNIX stability
    - Stunning Aqua UI, easy to use
    - Great network support (especially in regards to Windows)
    - Improved font rendering engine (not as fuzzy looking as before)
    - Great assortment of free iApps (iChat, iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes -- soon iCal and iSync)
    - Virtually every applets have undergone upgrades (e.g., Address Book, Calculator, Mail, Sherlock, Terminal)
    - Rapidly increasing number of native OS X applications
    - Super easy upgrade from OS X 10.1 (but I recommend clean install for "freshness")
    Cons:
    - Internet Explorer is embarrassingly buggy and limited (upcoming Internet Explorer 6.0 should remedy most of its shortcomings)
    - Limited customization (e.g., mouse pointer, color, limited number of "themes")
    - Still buggy (I found several iChat, Finder, and Mail bugs after weeks of use; soon-to-be-released 10.2.1 free patch should fix most of these)
    - Incompatibility with some 10.1 applications
    - Skimpy manual
    - Slow help engine
    - Some free iApps or applets need more features (i.e., you cannot edit photos with iPhotos)

Worth it for Time Machine alone... but there's lots more reasons to buy5
The OS comes in a very small package with a little manual. Install took 45 minutes to confirm that the CD was in good condition, 45 more to install. This review is not going to be full of technical jargon... instead a brief first impression from a long time Mac user (circa 1984 Mac 512Ke vintage). For the technicals, go to Apple, read geeky blogs. For the rest of us, I'll try to keep it more straight-forward. They claim 300 changes... here are what I think are some of the more interesting ones... apologies for the length of the review, relative to the number of changes claimed, a moderate length to this review. Updated December 09, 2007 to reflect new experiences.

    Pro:
-Time machine! OK, back up programs are available, but how many of them are sold versus the number of macs out there? This program is native, created by Apple for Apple. All I did was plug in a hard drive and Leopard asked if I wanted to make this my back-up drive for Leopard. I clicked yes, and that was it, all set up. It begins back up once the computer is left on and idle. The first takes a very long time, hours, subsequent back ups are hourly, however only files that have changed are saved, preserving storage space and computing power. Time machine looks like any open folder window when it gets down to it... like you went back in time and browsed around (hence the name). Similar to "snapshot" for those Windows XP users out there.

Mac OS X version 10.6.3 Snow Leopard

    Product Description

Mac OS X is renowned for its simplicity, its reliability, and its ease of use. So when it came to designing Snow Leopard, Apple engineers had a single goal: to make a great thing even better. They searched for areas to refine, further simplify, and speed up from little things like ejecting external drives to big things like installing the OS. In many cases, they elevated great to amazing. Installation DVD Printed and electronic documentation.
    *****UPDATE September 2nd 2009*****

A few other changes of minor importance but sometimes great usefulness:

    1) Air Port now shows all available wireless networks and their relative signal strength, something Windows has done going back to XP, but that for some strange reason has been absent from OSX 10.X until now. Now when you turn on the Air Port you get a drop down to select which wireless signal you want as well as signal strength.

    2) The date has been added to the desktop. This isn't that amazing but it is useful.

    3) I am LOVING the way stacks work now. They're so much more intuitive to use and navigate, especially the ability to brows through directories directly from the stack itself.

    4) Trash has the ability to restore a file to it's original location right from the trash. This is a feature common to Windows that has been very strangely absent from Mac OS. It's nice to see them catch this omission and correct it, but very odd it took this long to do it.
